Units Description
Unit 1- Social Science Perspective
- define anthropology, psychology, and sociology
- explain the similarities and differences between anthropology, psychology, and sociology
-identify the kinds of questions asked by anthropology, psychology, and sociology with respect to current world issues
Unit 2: Social Change
We start to examine the process of social transformation in Unit 2 of this course. We will apply theoretical knowledge to current situations by starting with the theories of social change, the forces that promote change, and the obstacles that stand in the way of change. We'll look at technology from the perspective of what's new as well as how it fits into campaigns for change. Ultimately, you will resume your social change campaign and start in-depth research on the subject you have selected.
Unit 3: Social Patterns and Trends
Examine the formation and identification of the Canadian Identity
- Examine Canadian statistics related to population trends in rural-suburban-urban areas
- Describe population trends
- Examine statistics and demographics through Community and Country Profiles
Unit 4: Global Social Challenges
Define Human Rights
- Analyze various legal documents that address the rights of individuals
- Describe the impact of the law when addressing human rights
- Define the difference between stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination (individual and systemic)
- Examine the impact of homophobia on individuals and groups
- Discuss the ism’s (i.e. racism, ageism, sexism) and their impact on individuals and groups
- Analyze the impact of hate crimes on individuals and groups
- Define globalization
