Guided Reading Strategies Rubrics CCSS Grades 1-5

With help from the Sister’s CAFÉ system, these are reading strategies put into rubric format to take the guess work out of tracking progress and internalize student learning. This unit includes all of the comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary strategies that children need to be successful readers. I made these rubrics in order to visually track my students’ progress not only in whole group, but in small groups as well.

These rubrics are in kid friendly language, correspond with the CCSS standards for Grades 1/2/3/4/5, and include Webb’s DOK Level Codes. These can be simply printed and posted in your room or put into a binder at your guided reading table.

Below is the list of guided reading strategies included in this unit:

Comprehension:
• Make connections
• Make predictions
• Make inferences
• Make a mental picture
• Check for understanding
• Back up and reread
• Ask questions
• Use non-fiction features
• Summarize
• Retelling
• Author’s purpose
• Recognize story elements
• Cause and effect
• Compare and contrast

Accuracy:
• Cross checking
• Flip the sound
• Use pictures
• Use beginning and ending sounds
• Blend and stretch words
• Chunk letters and sounds
• Skip a word and then come back
• Trade a word that make sense
• Recognize words by sight

Fluency:
• Select good fit books
• Reread text
• Read sight words quickly
• Change my reading rate
• Use punctuation
• Read with expression

Expanding Vocabulary:
• Tune into interesting words
• Predict and confirm the meaning of words
• Use word parts
• Ask someone to define words
• Use dictionary, thesaurus, and glossary
• Use the pictures and illustrations
