What educators are saying

This was such a great introduction to more in-depth geometry for my students. I loved the interactive notebook pages which were great resources for the end of unit tests and my students adored the write the room activities.

Guided Math Whole Group and Teacher-Led Small Group Lessons for Third Grade

Download the Free Standards-Alignment for Guided Math

Geometry Unit Focus
This unit focuses on exploring two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.

  • The two-dimensional components of this unit first expose students to vocabulary terms associated with two-dimensional figures (sides, vertices, etc.).
  • Students then incorporate their vocabulary to correctly identify and describe shapes. The unit also hones in on "special quadrilaterals", teaching students to how to differentiate between the quadrilaterals and what makes each one special.
  • The three-dimensional component explores the vocabulary terms associated with solid figures and teaches students how to use the vocabulary to correctly identify and describe figures.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole. For example, partition a shape into 4 parts with equal area, and describe the area of each part as 1/4 of the area of the shape.
