What educators are saying

This was a great resource to use with our students with learning disabilities. It really helped them visualize the process of learning and the feelings that can come along with it.
This is a staple in my room! The kids have learned about growth mindset since K and we hit it hard in 2nd grade!

Description

The Learning Pit Activity

Supporting growth mindset through the use of The Learning Pit concept of learning. This can be used as a bulletin board set, poster activity or simply used on one paper.

Students can recreate this throughout the year to make a journal of their learning journeys!

This "pit" will help you teach students, of any age, to understand that everyone goes through the same process in order to learn anything new. They are not alone in the journey!

This can easily be turned into a small group activity by having the kids sort the emotions and make their own poster, representing the feelings they have when going through the Learning Pit process. How students represent their learning is only limited by their creativity!

Every teacher focuses on different aspects of the pit. I usually focus on teaching strategies and feelings in order to teach students self-regulation skills which they can use for the rest of their life in any learning opportunity. Before a problem occurs, and after the excitement of learning something, we all experience a state of "normal." This is why the pit starts and ends on the same height in the diagram provided in this product. If your focus is on the growth in learning, you can consider having students draw their own learning curve, in their own creative way (poster paper etc), to represent their learning as there will be an "increase" in learning.

Included:

  • A blank page representing the pit - to be used or enlarged, if desired
  • 3 quotes to support learning
  • 12 speech bubbles of thoughts that prevent learning (large and small speech bubbles included)
  • 13 speech bubbles of thoughts that encourage growth/learning
  • 45 negative emotions which prevent learning
  • 31 positive emotions we feel when we are learning and/or are successful
