Description

The following task can be used as an activity and/or assessment. It is a great task for a formal or informal observation. However it is important to note that students should already be familiar with the concepts of greatest common factor and least common multiple. During this task, students will encounter two real world mathematical problems. First students will pretend to work for customer service at J.F.K. airport. They will provide information about the shuttle service J.F.K. offers that takes passengers from the airport to Manhattan. Second, students will pretend to be a salesperson for a cookie maker, and decide on the best price for a bag of cookies.

Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1–100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor. For example, express 36 + 8 as 4 (9 + 2).
