Description
The objective of this assignment is to introduce ocean plastics (microplastics and macroplastics are both covered) and examine a particular species that is affected by the plastic pollution.
This assignment begins with students watching a 15 minute special report by CNN on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The video covers microplastics and also introduces the albatross bird. Students answer questions along the way. The students then review some basic facts about the albatross, by reading a short National Geographic PDF. The next two sections have shorter videos to watch, and go into more details on the albatross bird, the plastics that can be found inside of the dead birds' bodies, and why so much plastic ends up on Midway Atoll. The last portions include exploring Midway Atoll using Google Earth links and summarizing what they have learned.
The assignment is a Google Doc and can easily be edited for changes that you prefer.
Perfect for virtual learning, as it includes a variety of learning methods, including the 3 videos (2 are very short), reading materials, and an interactive map.
The questions are not difficult.
