What educators are saying
Description
Are you looking for interesting and unusual ways to learn about human impacts on the environment? Planning for Earth Day, Clean Up Australia Day, Oceans Week, World Environment Day or World Water Day. If your students don't quite understand the importance of recycling, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch will alert them to the real impacts that just one plastic bottle can have.
While many people are unaware of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, it is a major issue affecting global environmental health – and a problem to which we all likely contribute without even knowing! My students were genuinely fascinated to learn about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The world's largest garbage dump is, in fact, in the middle of the ocean.
This packet will guide you through:
★ An introduction to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (defining key terms, maps)
★ The estimated size of the GPGP (and the problems with estimating its size)
★ The types of rubbish/garbage/debris found in the GPGP
★ The density of debris within the GPGP
★ The reasons that there is so much plastic within the ocean
★ The impacts on sea life (both immediate and long term)
★ The path of rubbish/garbage/debris travelling to the GPGP
★ The problems associated with cleaning the GPGP
★ Ways organisations have tried to prevent plastic entering the ocean
★ A potential solution to the GPGP problem
★ Supporting video links
Teacher answers are included for each page requiring student answers.
