Description

Hello Math Teachers! Once upon a time there was a perfect math worksheet on graphing stories ready for you and your students. This two-sided worksheet focuses on reading a situation or story and comparing the changes over time to other variables like speed, distance, or temperature and matching them to one of three graphs. This activity encourages students to use functions to model relationships between quantities by describing qualitatively the functional relationship between two qualities by analyzing a graph, including where the function is increasing or decreasing, linear or nonlinear. Students match a graph that exhibits the qualitative features of a function that has been described verbally.

This worksheet is suitable for middle school Pre-Algebra or as an Algebra review. It comes with an easy-to-use key and is ready for you to download today!

Formats

You will have two convenient formats for this activity, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs and teaching style.

The first format is a PDF that can be printed and used as a worksheet in the classroom. The two-sided printout includes a key, making it easy for you to grade and provide feedback to your students.

The second format is an Easel Activity, which allows you to assign the activity online for your students to complete on their own devices. This option is perfect for distance learning or for assigning homework. Simply assign the activity through your school's learning platform, including Google Classroom and Schoology. Your students will be able to complete the activity online and submit their answers for grading.

So whether you prefer a traditional printed worksheet or an online activity, I've got you covered. Choose the format that works best for you and give your students the tools they need to succeed in math!

Instructional Math Video

In order to provide the best possible learning experience for your students, I've included a QR code link to a video that I created to assist with using this worksheet. While the video is not professionally produced, it can be an incredibly helpful tool for students who are learning remotely, were absent during the activity, or are homeschooling. Additionally, it can serve as a substitute lesson plan in case of unexpected absences or classroom disruptions.

The video includes several examples and provides step-by-step instructions that can help students complete the activity successfully. By offering this additional resource, we hope to provide your students with the support they need to master the concepts covered in the worksheet

Teacher Feedback

“It was a perfect way to help my students think about story graphs. I loved using it with my students.”

"This is a great tool to use to help your students begin to think critically about and analyze information given about functions in real-world context and in a graph. My 8th grade Algebra 1 students were able to quickly show they understood how to graph a verbal description of a function....fun exercise!"

"This is a great resource and very engaging for my students. The students worked hard and found this to be extremely easy and helpful in their understanding of the topic."

“This was a great resource, and it saved me a lot of time! I liked that the scenarios and graphs were already broken up into sets of three, so the students only had to match three problems at a time. This made the activity less intimidating for the students who were struggling with the concept. ”
