Graffiti as Art: Mini Lesson or Sub Plan

This product includes a two-sided reference sheet as well as a printable worksheet. It could be used for a 1 or 2 class mini unit or as a planning sheet for a larger unit. I have also used it as a sub plan and got great feedback from both the sub and students.

The reference sheet gives students a brief background on what graffiti is as well as when it is a legal art form vs. illegal vandalism. It also includes examples of real graffiti, student artwork and lettering styles.

The worksheet allows students to design and draw their own graffiti tag on the top half. They can cut out their work and glue it to the photo of the brick wall on the bottom half. I have used this assignment with 4th grade and up.

Students may also enjoy using this style beyond the art room to illustrate key vocabulary or concepts in other subjects. For example: If students are learning about "Perseverance" they could write the word with each letter getting a little larger and then add a stick figure climbing the word in order to provide a clue to it's meaning.
