Description
There are three activities provided in this Graduated Cylinder and Liquid Volume Practice Measuring Lab resource. The first is a Graduated Cylinder mini-lesson worksheet that teaches students about the meniscus and how to measure liquid volume precisely. The first lab assesses students’ ability to follow a procedure, follow safety precautions, and measure liquid volume precisely with a graduated cylinder. If you want to give your students a challenge, use the second lab instead! The second lab provides a super fun open-ended challenge! I suggest using the second version if you have higher-level students, if this is a review of measuring liquid volume, or if you want to provide your students lots of authentic practice with measuring and experimental technique that is more advanced than the first lab.
Richly colored water is the magic liquid that creates a beautiful rainbow when students correctly follow the lab directions for the Color Magic Lab. For the Rainbow Rack Challenge, students will use the primary colors to create various shades of the secondary colors using trial and error and keeping with a given parameter. Then, they will use their full 'rainbow rack' to create custom 'designer' colors that they will write 'recipes' for and name (for example: Purple Haze!).
For the Rainbow Rack Challenge, collaborative data tables are provided in the download as Excel documents and as Google Sheets. Student groups can add their individual data to the spreadsheets for sharing and averaging results! Visual results let you assess your students' skills and analysis and reflection questions help students to reflect on the labs.
Take photos of your students and their results for fun classroom or Back to School Night decor or host a Designer Color Fashion Show!
