These lessons were made as a resource for my students who are learning virtually. Each lesson is was created with Ontario Social Studies- Geography curriculum in mind.
Grade 7 Unit Overview
Lesson Overview:
Lesson # 1 ~ What is Geography?
In this lesson, we will learn why geography is an important subject to study. We will explore the concepts of geographic thinking and describe the geographic inquiry process.
Lesson # 2 ~ Types of Landforms
In this lesson, we will learn about landforms. We will explore how these landforms were created and how they continue to change.
Lesson # 3 ~ Creation of Landforms
In this lesson, we will learn about the creation of landforms found in various locations around the world. We will explore how landforms have changed over time.
Lesson # 4 ~ Challenges Caused by Earth's Forces
In this lesson, we will explore the challenges that we face as a result of the Earth’s forces in our natural environment. We will learn about the location of earthquakes and volcanoes on the surface of the Earth, as well as, how we prepare for disasters should they occur.
Lesson # 5 ~ Climate Patterns
In this lesson, we will explore patterns of climate in various regions of the world. We will identify how climate change has impacted various natural landforms' features. We will create a climate graph and compare its results with other locations around the world.
Lesson # 5 ~ Natural Vegetation
In this lesson, we will explore patterns in the world’s vegetation. We will be able to describe how nature and humans have caused changes to these patterns. As a result of these changes, we can become more aware of how our impact is felt on the natural environment.
Lesson # 7 ~ Rivers and Oceans
In this lesson, we will explore the characteristics of water systems. We will learn about how natural forces and people change these natural water.
Grade 8 Unit Overview
Lesson Overview:
Lesson # 1 ~ What is Geography?
In this lesson, we will learn why geography is an important subject to study. We will explore the concepts of geographic thinking and describe the geographic inquiry process.
Lesson # 2 ~ How is Earth's Population Changing?
In this lesson, we will explore how the dynamics of a population, or a group of people, can help us understand our interactions in the environment.
Lesson # 3 ~ Where do people live?
In this lesson, we will explore population distribution, population density and settlements. We will learn why some populations change depending on the region they can be found in.
Lesson # 4 ~ What influences where people build settlements?
In this lesson, we will explore why humans live where they do. We will focus on the natural and human factors and explore specific features that influence human decisions on their choices.
Lesson # 5 ~ Settlements and the Environment
In this lesson, we will explore how the physical environment plays a large role in settlement patterns. We will take a look at climate and explore reasons why it may affect settlements in the future.
Lesson # 6 ~ Why do people move around?
In this lesson, we will explore today’s settlement trends. We will examine the migration of people, population pyramids, and the impact that they have on the environment.
Lesson # 7 ~ What is Land Use?
In this lesson, we will explore land use. We will identify significant land-use issues and determine how specific groups address these issues.
Lesson # 8 ~ Creating Sustainable Communities
In this lesson, we will identify ways to make communities more sustainable and discuss some of the major challenges that are involved in this process.
Strand B:
In this bundle, I have added the Grade 7 Strand B: Natural Resources Around the World and the Grade 8 Strand B: Economic Development and Quality of Life Units. These lessons were made as a resource for my students "learning from home". Each lesson is was created with Ontario Social Studies- Geography curriculum in mind.
Grade 7 Unit Overview
This unit is aligned with the expectations of the Ontario Social Studies Curriculum (Strand B: Natural Resources Around the World: Use and Sustainability). This unit was designed during COVID-19, when teachers shifted from in-class learning environments to a Virtual Classroom.
This unit explores many natural resources found in the environment. These resources are useful and valuable. Students will learn about how we use natural resources, the impact of that use, and communities around the world that are acting to protect natural resources.
Lesson Overview:
Lesson # 1 ~ Natural Resources
In this lesson, we will explore different types of natural resources, the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources, and the importance of sustainability.
Lesson # 2 ~ Supplying Demand
In this lesson, we will identify factors that affect the use and value of natural resources. We will also explore how human activity impacts people and the environment.
Lesson # 3 ~ Renewable Resources
In this lesson, we will explore the relationship between Earth’s environment and renewable resources. We will identify the environmental and social impacts of misusing and overusing these resources.
Lesson # 4 ~ Non-Renewable Resources
In this lesson, we will explore some of the ways in which people use non-renewable resources to meet their needs and wants. We will identify how these resources impact the environment and its relationship to the Earth.
Lesson # 5 ~ Flow Resources
In this lesson, we will explore flow resources. We will be able to explain the connections between these resources and Earth’s physical features.
Lesson # 6 ~ How are we addressing our use of natural resources?
In this lesson, we will explore various strategies that are currently being used to address the increasing demand globally for natural resources.
Grade 8 Unit Overview
This unit is aligned with the expectations of the Ontario Social Studies Curriculum (Strand B: Global Inequalities). This unit was designed during COVID-19, when teachers shifted from in-class learning environments to a Virtual Classroom.
In this unit, students will study factors that affect economic development and quality of life on a global scale and will examine responses to global inequalities. Students will be introduced to new types of maps and graphs, including scatter graphs, and population pyramids, and, at the same time, will continue to develop their ability to use a variety of sources, tools, and spatial technologies to study various geographic issues.
