Description

Common Core State Standards - Grade 5 Mathematics

This Smart notebook file is aligned with the 5th grade Common Core State Standard (CCSS) listed below.

[5.OA Operations & Algebraic Thinking ]

5.OA.2: Write simple expressions that record calculations with numbers, and interpret numerical expressions without evaluating them. For example, express the calculation “add 8 and 7, then multiply by 2” as 2 × (8 + 7). Recognize that 3 × (18932 + 921) is three times as large as 18932 + 921, without having to calculate the indicated sum or product.

Taken from the Notes Page:
"This lesson focuses on the Common Core 5th Grade Standard 5.OA.2. Prior to the lesson I teach the Properties of Addition. You will see a 'Do Now' Warm up slide, feel free to skip or delete.

The notes definition page as slide screen. Ask the questions of the students and lead a discussion on the difference between an equation and expression.

On the next page I ask students to work together to come up with as many "keywords" for each operation that would signal them to add, subtract, multiply, or divide. We then make a master list ion the slide. Addition and Subtraction words are hidden just click in the box to make them appear.

Finally, students practice the skill by identifying the correct expression to match the words. I use a worksheet from Common Core Mathematics by Newmark Learning for practice and homework.

*The second group of pages includes variables (no longer a 5th Grade standard - use for enrichment/challenge or 6th grade.
