What educators are saying

Great resource. Very comprehensive, easy to follow and engaging lessons and activities. I teach a 1/2 split and it was easy to merge the grade 1 data unit and the grade 2 data unit together to ensure both grade 1 and 2 expectations were covered.
I like that this resource has a space between every bar. I wish that there was a space and/or room for a space between the y axis and the first bar in every bar graph. (no bar should touch the y axis)

Description

The Grade 2, Unit 3: Data Literacy resource is a 100+-paged resource designed to meet the 2020 Ontario Mathematics curriculum expectations for Strand D: Data. This unit introduces students to concrete graphs, pictographs, and tally charts. Students learn how to read and interpret graphs and draw conclusions based on pre-made graphs. Students also create simple surveys involving 2 - 4 options, conduct the survey, and collect and interpret data. Please note this is a printable resource. There is NO Google Slide component to this resource.

Wonderland Math is a math unit series designed to meet the Ontario 2020 Mathematics curriculum. Each unit features between 8 – 12 lessons. Wonderland Math is hands-on and encourages students to think critically about math concepts, such as addition, subtraction, number sense, etc. Let’s take a look at what the Grade 2, Unit 3: Data Literacy resource includes.

Grade 2, Unit 3: Data Literacy resource provides lessons, activities, assessments, and hands-on practice for the following:

  • Sort sets of data about people or things according to two attributes
  • Use tables and logic diagrams to sort sets of data about people or things.
  • Collect data through observations, experiments, and interviews to answer questions of interest that focus on two pieces of information
  • Organize collected data in a two-way tally table
  • Display sets of data, using one-to-one correspondence, in concrete graphs, pictographs, line plots, bar graphs, and tables.
  • Use proper sources, titles, and labels when displaying sets of data.
  • Identify the mode for various sets of data shown in concrete graphs, pictographs, line plots, bar graphs, and tables.
  • Explain what the mode tells us about the data
  • Analyze different sets of data shown in various ways
  • Ask and answer questions about the data.
  • Draw conclusions and make convincing arguments and informed decisions

The specific expectations that this unit addresses are as follows:

  • D1.1: Sort sets of data about people or things according to two attributes, using tables and logic diagrams, including Venn and Carroll diagrams
  • D1.2: Collect data through observations, experiments, and interviews to answer questions of interest that focus on two pieces of information, and organize the data in two-way tally tables
  • D1.3: Display sets of data, using one-to-one correspondence, in concrete graphs, pictographs, line plots, and bar graphs with proper sources, titles, and labels
  • D1.4: Identify the mode(s), if any, for various sets presented in concrete graphs, pictographs, line plots, bar graphs, and tables, and explain what this measure indicates about the data
  • D1.5: Analyze different sets of data presented in various ways, including in logic diagrams, line plots, and bar graphs, by asking and answering questions about the data and drawing conclusions, then making convincing arguments and informed decisions
