Grade 1 or 2 French Immersion Literacy Daily Worksheets Using Personal Word Wall

The 20 Daily Worksheets are designed to be used in early Grade 1 or 2 French Immersion but can also be used in Grade 4 Core French. They are an excellent tool for implementing Independent Work during Guided Reading or any time the teacher needs no interruptions.

They are based on a word bank appropriate for developing oral conversations that can be reinforced through the daily reading and writing activities. Vocabulary and structures used involve animals, colours, outdoor activities, and personal preferences. These are typical early French topics that were probably covered to some extent in SK French Immersion. If not, they are appropriate for grade 1 or 2, leading into many content areas. Another option is using them as Emergency Supply Teacher worksheets!

All 20 Worksheets are in 11 x 17 format. (I print them in colour on 8 ½ x 11, with a few black and white copies on the large size for those who might need bigger font, etc. Since they are pdf files, you can still print them in either size.

Literacy Activities include:

- the alphabet, upper and lower case

- the 5 days of the school week

- 24 SK and grade 1 high frequency words

- 8 common animals

- 10 verbs that convey common activities that both humans and animals can do (jouer, marcher, courir, sauter, glisser, grimper, nager, plonger, ramper)

- colours

- vowels

- initial consonant sounds for letters with only one sound (b, d, f, j, l, m, n, p, r, s, t)

Learning Skills include:

- reading lists, charts, columns, basic instructions, simple sentences

- copying

- printing

- completing sentences

- demonstrating comprehension through a variety of activities

- highlighting

- using a word wall

- reading the room

- working independently

- drawing and colouring fine motor development

- cutting and pasting

Word Wall:

The individual Word Wall sheet includes all the words learned throughout the course of this unit of learning. It should be printed and laminated for repetitive use. It can be taped to individual desks or on file folders. The verbs and animals have picture clues. I included 2 copies, one if you print them in colour, and another in black and white for you to add the colours for the colour chart.

Lessons:

Each of the 20 Activity Sheets has an embedded literacy lesson focus that builds their language proficiency. A mini-lesson around the new skills is included on the Smart Notebook file for each page and activity.

The initial content is based on SK/Grade 1 review which also makes them useful for diagnostic testing. They are scaffolded to become increasingly more difficult with less support as the students learn to use the Word Wall as a resource to complete the open response activities.
