Description
The Grade 1, Unit 4: Data Literacy resource is a 100+-paged resource designed to meet the 2020 Ontario Mathematics curriculum expectations for Strand D: Data. This unit introduces students to concrete graphs, pictographs, and tally charts. Students learn how to read and interpret graphs and draw conclusions based on pre-made graphs. Students also create simple surveys involving 2 - 4 options, conduct the survey, and collect and interpret data. Please note this is a printable resource. There is NO Google Slide component to this resource.
Wonderland Math is a math unit series designed to meet the Ontario 2020 Mathematics curriculum. Each unit features between 8 – 12 lessons. Wonderland Math is hands-on and encourages students to think critically about concepts related to math, such as addition, subtraction, number sense, etc. Let’s take a look at what the Grade 1, Unit 4: Data Literacy resource includes.
Grade 1, Unit 4: Data Literacy resource provides lessons, activities, assessments, and hands-on practice for the following:
- Sort sets of data about people or things according to one attribute
- Describe rules used for sorting
- Collect data through observations, experiments, and interviews to answer questions of interest that focus on a single piece of information
- Record data using methods of their choice
- Organize data in tally tables
- Display sets of data, using one-to-one correspondence, in concrete graphs and pictographs with proper sources, titles, and labels
- Order categories of data from greatest to least frequency for various data sets displayed in tally tables, concrete graphs, and pictographs
The specific expectations that this unit addresses are as follows:
- D1.1: Sort sets of data about people or things according to one attribute, and describe rules used for sorting
- D1.2: Collect data through observations, experiments, and interviews to answer questions of interest that focus on a single piece of information; record the data using methods of their choice; and organize the data in tally tables
- D1.3: Display sets of data, using one-to-one correspondence, in concrete graphs and pictographs with proper sources, titles, and labels
- D1.4: Order categories of data from greatest to least frequency for various data sets displayed in tally tables, concrete graphs, and pictographs
- D1.5: Analyze different sets of data presented in various ways, including in tally tables, concrete graphs, and pictographs, by asking and answering questions about the data and drawing conclusions, then make convincing arguments and informed decisions

This Wonderland Math unit is broken down into six sections.
Unit and Lesson Overview
In this section, you will find the unit overview with the lesson title and focus of each lesson and how the Ontario Mathematics curriculum aligns with each lesson (specific expectations only).
Lessons and Activities
This section makes up the bulk of the pages in the resource. Here you will find the lessons you need for the unit and the materials required for each lesson. Each lesson is followed by any additional materials such as activity pages, game boards, whole-group instruction pieces that are needed to carry out the specific lesson.
Learning Games and More
The Wonderland Math units are based on the recognition that hands-on experiences for students in math are important. There are additional learning games provided in this section in addition to the ones used for each of the lessons. Please note that lesson games are found in the Lessons and Activities section.
Additional Activities
This section is filled with additional practice activities and problems for students to solve. These activities are print and go, which means there is no prep needed (unless there are some cut and paste activities).
Teacher Assessment Pieces
This section is made up of assessment trackers you can use to see how students are progressing towards meeting the specific and overall expectations outlined in the math curriculum. These assessment trackers are intended to be used one-on-one.
Answer Keys
This section contains answer keys for most of the activities found in the resource. Some activities do not have an answer key as there is no one right answer, or it is dependent on the number the student chooses to work with for the activity.
