Gothic Novel Unit for AP Lit | Materials for Gothic Book Clubs & Lit Circles

This unit is designed for AP® Lit students to read five different gothic novels (Frankenstein, Dracula, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Jane Eyre, and Wuthering Heights) in small groups in a literature circle design. Multiple assessment options are used with five unique rubrics, including:

• Reading journals (rubric included for grading)
• Group discussions (rubric included for grading)
• 3 On-demand paragraph quizzes per novel (rubric included for grading)
• On-demand summative essay (AP®-style holistic rubric included for grading)
• Formal paper with student-designed writing prompt (rubric included for grading)
• Oral book report for each group (rubric included for grading)
• Thematic one-pager assignment

This unit comes with a student-designed unit handout as well as a detailed teacher guide to eliminate confusion for you. This unit is designed to grow your students from passive learners to active seekers and teachers.

Each resource is available in Word and PDF and nearly every resource is editable. This can be adapted for use in a British Literature class, or reduced to use only some of the novels included in its design.
