Description

This is a handout that asks students to read charts, graphs, and short descriptions about these problems in the Soviet Union in the 1980s: per capita gross domestic product, surpluses and deficits of production of food, proxy wars, and protest movements. They analyze how these events caused problems in the Soviet Union and compare them to problems in China under Mao and Deng Xiaoping. There are QR codes for them to scan and watch youtube videos. Then, students read about the detente, glasnost, and perestroika solutions to reform the Soviet Union, asked to compare them to the Four Modernizations of Deng Xiaoping , and finally, analyze the fall of the Soviet Union.
