Description

PURPOSE:

This activity provides students with fifteen different coding-related challenges in Google Sheets. It is designed as a self-paced set of tasks to be completed through exploration of the vast library of built-in functions within Google Sheets. Not only will students be problem solving to figure out the tasks, they will also be developing skills in using the Google Suite along the way.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

This product contains:

✏️ 15 increasingly difficult challenges using functions for Google Sheets

✏️ At least 3 hints for each challenge that students can reveal one at a time

✏️ A sample output function for students to see and make use of if needed (can be removed if you'd like or used as an answer key)

STORY:

With the shift to reliance on distance learning in the past years, I developed this activity to give students a taste of the logical processes and mathematical thinking behind computer programming. The functions inside of Google Sheets follow specific rules can can be learned and leveraged to do some amazing things. Want to know how old you are in years and days by simply typing in your birthday? A function in Sheets can do that. Want to know exactly how many centimeters are in 15 inches? A function in Sheets can do that. Want to know what "Hasta la vista" means in English? A function in Sheets can do that!

SAMPLE CHALLENGES:

  • Write a function to express the quotient of two numbers as a mixed number
  • Write a function that returns just the first name of a name in the format Last, First
  • Write a function that can tell when someone wins the game of Tic-Tac-Toe
