I used this with my 4th and 5th grade Gifted Students. We had AMAZING discussion and it was great for them to have to come up with Creative answers instead of Common ones. It really stretched their brains and we had some great collaborate work going on!
My students were very engaged in the activities included in this resource. They also enjoyed learning about giftedness and the way it may affect their learning journey.

Description

Need a creative and fun way to share information about being GIFTED with your gifted learners?

This is a creative and differentiated resource for gifted students in grades 4-6.

This "Outta the Box" Classroom Competition has been used as part of a Monthly GATE Pullout Program, but could also be part of your gifted curriculum that supports teaching students about their unique social and emotional characteristics.

This 2+ hour workshop can be done on a Fun Friday or within the week during a GATE rotation or after-school.

The theme is “GIFTED”. Students will read tidbits of information about being GIFTED and how that means they are wired differently. The Creative BUILDER challenge for WIRING involves a hands-on task with pipe cleaners and a ping-pong ball.

They will be challenged with building a model of a CANTILEVER after discussing the importance of trying new things, going outside the box, or in this case, Going Out on a LIMB.

Creative Talker challenges have students thinking creatively about COMPETITION and Leaders or FOLLOWERS?

What are "OUTTA The BOX" Classroom Competitions?

An "Outta the Box" Competition is a STEAM-based, classroom-friendly workshop that develops students’ teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking skills in an engaging and meaningful way.

An "Outta the Box" Competition uses easy-to-find materials for all challenges. Classroom Competitions are approximately 2 hours, with each challenge lasting anywhere from 10 to 40 minutes.

Challenges can be performed in a 2-hour block or broken into smaller blocks of time. 3 to 5 teams of 4-6 students work best for OTB Competitions.

Why Have "Outta the Box" Competitions?

The objective of an "Outta the Box" Competition is to prepare today’s children for tomorrow’s challenges.

"Outta the Box" Competitions provide students with unique opportunities to develop creative thinking skills. Students learn to think on their feet using the materials at hand and develop solutions that come to life in a friendly and competitive manner.

Unlike many classroom problems or challenges, there is never one correct solution, although some of those solutions may work better than others. All solutions depend on teamwork, while also being dependent on the basic characteristics of creative thinking such as:

awareness, curiosity, imagination, flexibility, fluency, originality,
elaboration and perseverance.
