Description

Do your students have a big geometry test coming up? This flipchart is a great way to review the multiple concepts they have learned throughout the semester. It gives an overview of concepts of basic geometry including: names of shapes, plane shapes, sorting by attributes, sides and corners, faces, solid shapes, finding plane shapes within solid shapes, solid shapes that roll and identifying shapes within shapes. This is lesson is aligned with the Houghton Mifflin Math Series, Ch. 7 - 1st grade. The lesson opens with the names of shapes and the shapes itself, and students are invited to go up to the board and match the shape to its name. Next, the lesson moves to sorting by size, shape, and color. If your class has individual marker boards, they are asked to take them out and the teacher will explain that once she pulls down the black screen, students are to identify how each set of shapes presented are sorted. If the students do not have marker boards, they may use paper, or it can done as a whole class on the Promethean Board (there are a variety of ways to do this activity). Next, students are given a slide with sides and corners, with the definitions of each and the students are invited to identify how many sides and corners each shape on the page has. Next, it moves onto faces, the students are given solid shapes and they must determine how many faces they face (can be done in groups, as a class, individually, or with partners), then once it is determined, the teacher may move the black boxes next to the shape, which display the answers. Next, students are given another set of solid shapes and are asked which ones can roll. This slide is a good opportunity to break out the math solid shape manipulatives (optional) and students can test their guesses. The next slide is a matching slide in which the students are asked to match which plane shape they can find in each solid shape. The next slide is a plane shape in which students are encouraged to draw a line to make two triangles. The students are then given a list of guided and individual work to complete (aligned with the textbook directions), along with geometry journal entry.
