Description

These resources support students as they learn about geometry. New academic vocabulary is provided along with visuals. Students are challenged to answer questions and explain their thinking. For example: How do you know a rectangle is a quadrilateral? Is a circle a polygon? How do you know? Students are asked to demonstrate comprehension by identifying and categorizing shapes. They are asked to identify types of lines (parallel and intersecting), rays, line segments, and angles in different diagrams.

Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
