What educators are saying

My students really enjoyed these lessons. The foldable helped break up vocabulary so they didn't have to do them all at once! Thanks
This activity really helped my middle schoolers grasp the relationship between genotype and phenotype and was a great introduction to the fact that traits are carried on chromosomes and can be inherited independently.

Description

Do you need to teach genetics and heredity? Students will learn about genetics, heredity, mutations, and trait advantages. They will use a model to describe genetic mutations. They will learn about asexual and sexual reproduction and genetic variation. They will learn to use Punnett Squares to determine possible phenotypes in offspring. Students will love the Game on Random Traits with Monsters that is included. They will use Punnett Squares to determine phenotypes of offspring monsters and more!

This resource includes:

  • two informative slideshows
  • nonfiction text passages on genetics
  • interactive notebook flaps
  • lesson plans
  • labs
  • task cards
  • a game on mutation
  • response sheets
  • a multiple-choice assessment
  • answer keys

Tina ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied

I just love the way the author really ties to the standard and has it so well planned out. The suggested schedule is great. No busy work here. This is a rich standards-based unit. Just what I have come to expect from this author. My students loved the monster activities.

Mrs Mays ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Extremely Satisfied

What a fun way to show students how mutations are random. I also loved that it was hands-on and that the students could see the monster before and compare to the after monster easily seeing the mutations.

Aligned with these standards:

⭐NGSS MS-LS3-1 Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects on the structure and function of the organism.

⭐NGSS MS LS3-2 Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction result in offspring with genetic variation.

⭐Utah SEEd 7.4.1
Develop and use a model to explain the effect that different types of reproduction have on genetic variation, including asexual and sexual reproduction.
and
Utah SEED 7.4.3
Develop and use a model to describe why genetic mutations may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects on the structure and function of the organism. Emphasize the conceptual idea that changes to traits can happen because of genetic mutations. Specific changes of genes at the molecular level, mechanisms for protein synthesis, and specific types of mutations will be introduced at the high school level.

If the whole unit is completed, I estimate it will take about 11 days.  A suggested schedule is included.

NGSSMS-LS3-1
Develop and use a model to describe why structural changes to genes (mutations) located on chromosomes may affect proteins and may result in harmful, beneficial, or neutral effects to the structure and function of the organism. Emphasis is on conceptual understanding that changes in genetic material may result in making different proteins. Assessment does not include specific changes at the molecular level, mechanisms for protein synthesis, or specific types of mutations.
NGSSMS-LS3-2
Develop and use a model to describe why asexual reproduction results in offspring with identical genetic information and sexual reproduction results in offspring with genetic variation. Emphasis is on using models such as Punnett squares, diagrams, and simulations to describe the cause and effect relationship of gene transmission from parent(s) to offspring and resulting genetic variation.
