about your students and their current mathematical mindset.

Students will be surprised to learn what math is NOT! Teach them that math is the study of patterns. Discuss the ways in which mathematicians work, which is the focus of the next several lessons.

We learn from each other! Students will learn the importance of working collaboratively. Creating and assessing group norms will set the tone for outstanding group work throughout the year!

Show students that mathematics is a visual and creative subject. Show students that there are multiple methods to solve problems (and they are ALL good!) Create tasks that are accessible, yet challenging, so every student has the opportunity to succeed and grow mathematically.

• “Valuable Mistakes and Fabulous Feedback”

Teach students that mistakes are a positive thing!! Show students that many of the people they look up to have failed (many times), yet persevered to become very successful. Convince your students that mistakes are simply a part of learning (and nothing to get embarrassed by or upset about). Your mind grows from the mistakes you make.

Writing and using “I Can... “ statements as a self-assessment tool, sample “I Can...” statements for both 7th and 8th grade*, a list of reflection questions to incorporate into daily homework assignments, and printable “Two Stars and a Wish” peer assessments.

Setting goals is a part of life. Teach your students how to set positive, realistic, measurable goals to stay motivated and keep focused all year long. Use the templates provided to start setting goals right away! (I think we, the teachers, should set some goals of our own, too!)
