GRADE 6 SCIENCE ALBERTA - Evidence and Investigation

This is a grade 6 science unit that is Alberta Aligned and covers the majority of topic D, Evidence and Investigation. This is specifically for grade 6 science in Alberta. There are 80 slides (some slides will be non applicable if you choose not to use the *IDEA* for a "choice board"--choice board activities are not included, I used the "Sams Guide" to build my own choice board), assignment worksheets (that can be printed or used digitally), and 'how to' guides to help you use the science unit. Please note that this is a starting point for your unit and should not be considered as a comprehensive, in-depth, program to teach this section of the curriculum. The depth will come from conversations with your students, answering questions, and corresponding activities.

• This purchase includes 80+ slides and five activities that will cover Topic D: Evidence and Investigation from the Alberta Program of Studies, except for SLE#1. Not everyone will require the entire bundle, so I am selling these items separately. 

• Some prep/small purchases are required for this unit: ink pads and toy cars. I get them from the dollar store or amazon.

Slides

I treat my slides as my detailed unit plan. Some slides will be non applicable if you choose not to use the *IDEA* for a "choice board" (choice board activities are not included). I used the "Sams Guide" to build my own choice board. If you don't use the idea you can remove the slides that do not apply to you, and those slides will be: 

• Slides 3, 4, 5, 79, 80, and 81 
• That said, I include the “badges” template with this package. You can use it as you see fit or disregard it if it’s not necessary. 

The slides take you through 7 brief lessons covering nearly the entire set of outcomes in Topic D: Evidence and Investigation from the Alberta Program of Studies. The slides include: 

• ‘What’s On The Menu’ - this is how I introduce the curricular outcomes to the students. I explicitly state the outcome and then have an “I Can…” statement written beneath it. 
• Explicit Instruction/Details - I add this for each topic. There are some supplementary videos that I have added to the slides; these are not my videos. You can supplement with something different if that works better for your students. 
• Note Taking - I have “Take Notes” on the slides that I would have my students take notes on. I don’t do this for everything, but to prepare them for junior high, I teach them how to extrapolate the essential details and note them down for their review. I do short quizzes rather than extensive tests. I incorporate PAT review questions into our morning work. 
• Key Terms - I have added a free download, “Vocabulary Mapping,” to this package. I have the students use this to familiarize themselves with the rich vocabulary in the unit. I have some key terms listed; this is not a comprehensive list; you or your students can add more as you deem appropriate. 
• Task Preview - There are previews of the activity worksheets in the slides. Additionally, there is a “how to use” document for your use in the downloads. 
• Nearly all of these tasks require being in-class and with peers. This purchase is not an appropriate unit for online learning. 

Worksheets

• Five worksheets coincide with each activity. There are explanations of the activities in the slides and a “How to Use” document that comes with the downloads. This explains what to do and what materials you will need.
