These CAT QUEST cards are designed to support the 2016 Virginia SOL Mathematics Computer Adaptive Test format.

One big change with the Computer Adaptive Test format is that students will not be able to go back and review their answers on the test. Once a student chooses an answer and moves on to the next question they cannot go back. These CAT QUEST cards were designed to provide students practice with Virginia SOL type questions and to build confidence as they answer each question as they move through the deck.

The new 2016 aligned CAT QUEST cards are now available. The CAT QUEST cards come in both full page size, which are easy to project, and also in a trifold size. The trifold deck is designed so the 9 question cards are printed on a single page and the cover and answer key are printed on another single page along with a REMEMBER card to support students in the CAT test format. This trifold size prints on two pages. The trifold size can also be printed front to back to make a trifold version. I use the trifold version for a partner activity where one student sees and answers the questions while the partner sees the answers on the reverse. I also use the trifold version as a paper and pencil formative assessment tool. The questions on the CAT QUEST cards are presented in both a multiple choice format and in an open response format. Answer Keys and Answer sheets are included.

Each deck in the collection is specific to a strand and includes 9 questions for each strand that students will answer. While the actual Virginia SOL test may have more or less than 9 questions on a strand, this number of questions provides a good practice for students as they become confident and comfortable with giving their best answer as they move through the deck of questions.

This set of 6 decks of CAT QUEST cards support the COMPUTATION AND ESTIMATION VIRGINIA SOLs for the GRADE 4 2016 SOLs for MATH.

I use the CAT QUEST cards in a variety of ways:

• One deck is used to model and practice the changes that students will see with the CAT version of the Virginia SOL Mathematics test. I use the full page version and project the questions as we work together and talk about both math strategies and test taking strategies. I then create an Anchor Chart (much like the included REMEMBER list that is included) to display in the classroom as a reminder of test taking tips to consider with the CAT Mathematics test.

• I print the decks of CAT QUEST cards and connect them with rings to have handy for a quick review or to use with students.

• Students work together in small groups or with partners with a deck of CAT QUEST cards to answer each question in the order they are presented and to record their answers on the Answer Sheet.

• I place decks of the CAT QUEST cards in a math center and students work independently or with a partner to answer questions.

• I have also printed the trifold size deck of cards with the cover and answer key printed on the back and fold this to make a trifold or pamphlet style that students can use as above and also as a write on version for me to collect as a formative assessment.
