I used this unit along with the novel Frindle with my gifted and talented third grade class. It could be easily adapted to older students as well.
Inside the print and go bundle you'll find:
- What's in the Box - Teacher hides a pen in a box and students use deductive thinking by asking good questions to discover the pen and the literary unit to be studied.
- 3-2-1 Bridge - Students are asked about their knowledge of the dictionary, an important book according to Frindle's Ms. Granger. Students must then write words, questions, and analogies related to the dictionary.
- See Think Wonder - Students study the book cover and the writing on the back of the book to gain insights into what they will be reading.
- Research Information and Questions on the Red-Winged Blackbird - Since Nick took a fancy to the Red-Winged Blackbird early in the Frindle Novel, students are guided through a questionaire about these feathered friends. Six cards are to be placed around the room for students to walk about and find answers to questions.
- Two Frindle Matrix Logic Puzzles - Students critical thinking skills are challenged with these logic puzzles geared toward gifted and talented or bright students. These may be used in centers, individually, or for group activities.
- Questions about Quote from Novel - Of course it's a silly fad and when you ad an e to fad, you get fade." Students answer questions related to this quote and their thoughts about fads. Students are also challenged to come up with a new fad of their own.
- Let's Make a Word - In this activity students are asked to design and write about a coin depicting their own new word. Students must create the coin and answer questions about it.
- Either / Or - Students must form opinions about what they would rather do in situations that relate to Frindle, personal choices, friendships, and more. The students move to a side of the room to show their preferences and then debate about these with their classmates. This is a great way to enhance accountable talk. At the end of this activity, students are free to write an opinion piece about what they discussed.
- Frindle Sudoku - In this challenging cut and paste activity, students must use logical thinking skills to solve a puzzle.
- Frindle Dictionary Practice - Students must look up words to answer"yes" "no" questions about vocabulary words from Frindle. If the answer is "No," students must explain why completing the statement is impossible.
- Writing Activity - Students are asked to explain why they would want to coin a new word in this writing prompt.
- Brainstorming - Students are asked to brainstorm a word for each category on a grid. The letters the word begins with must be the letters in the word "Frindle." When finished, students are asked to make and present a skit using words from the Brainteaser.
- Critical Reading "The Dictionary Assignment" This critical reading story is designed to bring out strong accountable talk when students read a vaguely written short story and decide if statements are true, false, or if they can't tell.
- Frindle Etymology - Students research the parts of words and coin new words from these prefixes, suffixes, or roots. This activity will grow students vocabulary as they learn roots. Plus, students will have fun coining new words such as: "Chronocide" or to kill time.
- Dictionary Race Students love diving into their dictionaries on a race to see who can find the Frindle vocabulary word first. This activity includes the words and definitions of eighteen vocabulary words from chapters 10 - 13.
- Frindle Book Review - Give students clear directions on how to write a review of the novel Frindle, once they have finished. Students are asked to write four paragraphs and are given clear instructions as to what should be included in each paragraph.
- Creative Final Product - To culminate students reading of the novel Frindle, this print and go pages gives five ideas as to creative products for the students.
- Answer Keys - Find answers to all of the activities for which these apply.
