Description

Friendship Group Counseling Curriculum for grades 5-8 about how to maintain healthy friendships, work through conflict, and be a quality friend. Materials are not gender specific. Includes 8 group sessions that take 30-45 minutes. Each session includes a full ASCA-aligned lesson plan, activities, visuals, games, and exit tickets. This download also includes data collection tools and everything you need to get started on your group including an editable parent consent letter and group passes. With minimal prep, this group is ready for you to go!

8 Sessions (Click preview to see a full scope & sequence):

  1. Qualities of a Friend: Students will establish group norms and talk about what is most important to them in their friendships.
  2. Healthy, Unhealthy, and Abusive Friendships: Students will play a game similar to the popular game Apples to Apples to help them learn to recognize traits of healthy and unhealthy friendships.
  3. Think Before You Speak: Students will practice through role plays learning what kinds of things should be said out loud, and what should be kept to themselves.
  4. Communication Styles: Students will play a team game that will help them learn to recognize the 3 different communication styles (assertive, aggressive, and passive).
  5. I Statements: Lots of practice with this one! Discussion cards and role plays will help students learn this sentence frame to talk about how they are feeling.
  6. Apologizing: Students will learn how to make a genuine apology and also reflect on how to respond to an apology. This lesson recognizes that even though one party may be ready to apologize, the other may not be ready to accept that apology.
  7. Disagreements: Students will practice expressing disagreements respectfully and learn how to have healthy conversations about differences.
  8. What Are You Known For: Students will reflect on their reputation and what they can do to improve their reputation or make it into what they want it to be. Then, students will make a fun hexaflexagon paper fidget that will help remind them of what they want to be known for.
