What educators are saying

Love your mystery of history activities! My class really enjoyed sifting through this resource and using evidence to make their claims. It gives them an excellent opportunity to apply research and social studies skills!
My students and I loved this! This is one of the first lessons I teach each semester and it lends itself well to creating group work norms.

Description

Learn about the causes of the French and Indian War, and its impacts on the road to the American Revolution with this engaging crime scene investigation activity that encourages critical thinking!

A visually engaging case file is provided with comprehensive background readings on the history of the French and Indian War, Native American alliances and impacts, the Albany Plan of Union, and more.

Students will learn about the differences in French and British colonial management, and their relationships with Native American tribes. Student detectives will encounter non-fiction background information, maps, primary source documents, and much more while taking detective notes on what they learn. They will then answer the reading comprehension response questions, complete a timeline activity, and draw and support their own hypothesis about the impacts of the French and Indian War! Two bonus writing extension activities included as well!

This investigation activity can be used as a printable packet activity, or as an engaging stations classroom activity with groups! Teacher and student notes are provided, along with an answer key for the background reading comprehension activity.

This activity is provided in both ready-to-print color and black and white versions.

This resource makes learning about the French and Indian War highly engaging and is a great supplement, introduction, or reinforcement activity to any lesson on early American history and the 13 Colonies. Students will learn about the role notable figures like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin had during the French and Indian War, and leave the lesson with an understanding of how this conflict helped set the stage for the American Revolution!

This activity is designed to promote active learning and critical thinking skills, and have students think like historians. Students will practice making and justifying claims.
