Description

Get your students excited to learn about French beginning sounds with this phonological awareness activity! This French pocket chart centre is a versatile way to teach your students French beginning sounds. It’s easy to understand, making this French phonological awareness activity perfect to do as a whole-group, and even for independent learning!

La conscience phonologique is a foundational skill in learning how to read in French. Identifying les sons initiaux en français is an important skill because it helps them learn how to identify sounds in words, and see relationships between different words. This will then translate into orthographic mapping skills as they learn to read in French.

This French beginning sound centre includes:

  • Yes & no cards for sorting
  • 48 cards with the same beginning sound
  • 48 cards without the same beginning sound
  • A total of 96 cards to sort

Your students will love practicing French phonological awareness with this hands-on activity. There are tons of cards included, so you can play this over and over without too much overlap.

Setup is quick and easy... Just grab a pocket chart, a handful of cards, and you’re ready for an engaging and educational French literacy activity!

Here are some other ways you can use this French phonological awareness activity:

  • Splat - choose 2 students to compete against each other. Give them each a fly swatter. Lay cards out on the carpet and call a beginning sound. First one to swat the correct pair wins a point! You can also do this by identifying which of the cards doesn’t have the same first sound (or which one does have the same beginning sound in French)
  • Beginning sound identification - choose a card and ask students to identify what the beginning sound is. Have them write the letter down on a whiteboard
  • Generating words - choose a card and ask students to provide other words with that beginning sound

Use this for:

  • French phonological awareness warm-up
  • Whole-group learning activity
  • Small-group targeted practice
  • Literacy centres
  • French game for early finishers
  • and more!
