I am really trying to avoid mindless worksheets in math as much as possible. I have noticed a huge shift in my students' overall attitude toward learning math due to this change and I highly recommend you try it. Along with guided lessons, French math centers, whole-group instruction, hands-on exploration, and outdoor learning, we also enjoy incorporating crafts into our math block!
It is not something I would have thought to be very useful but now I see the true value in allowing students to share their knowledge & understanding of math concepts in different ways other than a simple worksheet!
My students really enjoy doing crafts and so do I. To make math a little more hands-on and exciting, I love wrapping up a new unit with a fun craft that students can take home as a symbolic way to share with their families that they've "mastered" and completed a French math unit. Of course, these crafts can be completed at any time throughout the unit.
Not to mention, you can totally use these crafts as an assessment piece to hand-in to you! What better way to showcase their knowledge than with a hands-on approach! I have actually used my math crafts in my report card comments, as examples of how my students applied certain skills!
Another way to use these crafts is as decor! You can display your students' crafts to showcase what you are currently working on in math :)
Time-saving tip: use a French math craft during your French guided-math centres. One station could be working on this math craft. Students will remain engaged during their rotation. As the concepts should have already been taught before students complete the craft, this can even work as a sub-plan in math to complete with a substitute teacher!
