Description

How to talk about school in a FLE A2/B1 class?

This resource is composed of three main pedagogical sequences that will allow your learners to deal with the theme of school and its problems.

Discipline in school:

The first sequence is the funniest one, as it focuses on nonsense done at school and how to avoid it. First, your learners will have to understand a document that presents a school in India that puts its teachers and students under video surveillance. This listening exercise is followed by several background discussions about the school system such as:

- the advantages and disadvantages of having cameras in a school

- the consequences of cameras on the personality and behavior of students

- the alternatives to cameras

- the usefulness of certain punishments

The last point, "punishments", will be the focus of the following activity. This is a song by Renan Luce, from the soundtrack of The Little Nicholas. The video clip and the following activities will be used to trigger some reactions from your students about the way the school handles field trips. The goal will also be to give advice to the teacher who is overwhelmed, but also to give her opinion on an isolated case of school bullying.

Non-mixing in school:

This sequence begins with a trigger document. The aim of this listening will be to make the learners understand the inequalities between girls and boys at school. But also the solutions used to rebalance the differences in level.

After this authentic document, the learners will be invited to react to certain opinions on the subject. Finally, the last speaking will allow the learners to express themselves on the inequalities at school in a more general way. They will be given an element and then they will have to find the solution to this problem in sub-groups or in a forum.

"This is the title of the text that learners will have to understand in order to answer questions about single-sex schools. While some learners are doing this reading comprehension, others will be talking about a poster "schools must necessarily..."

The last activity in this sequence is a problem-solving interaction exercise between two or more students. Students will be asked to put themselves in the shoes of annoying parents. The topics of these interactions will be a mixture of the two sequences, namely, discipline and gender neutrality in school.

Inclusion of disabled students:

The final sequence begins with an audio document that presents the history of the inclusion of people with disabilities in school. Your students will have to answer questions about the document and respond to comments, sometimes very controversial. This will be followed by a speaking on the following theme: "school for all". In sub-groups, students will have to follow a framework in order to orally present the functioning of their inclusive school.

Finally, this sequence ends with a drama. A student has had an accident and has become disabled. He asks questions individually to the learners to help him integrate. The goal will be to give him the best answers in a forum. Then, his mother will call on you to help her find the most suitable institution for her son. The objective for the learners will be to understand the email she writes and to propose the school that meets all her criteria. It is a table to be filled in as during the DELF B1.

As always, a list of vocabulary and practice exercises will be done at the end and a writing will also be done at home.

Congratulations to you for this acquisition.
