What educators are saying

This is a great resource that is thorough and allows for differentiation. The activities are fun and engaging. Thank you!
This pre-made unit saved me a lot of time, and had my class more engaged and more interested in French than I've seen for years. It's a great resource, and I highly recommend it.

    Description

Clothing in French full unit BUNDLE with a presentation, flashcards, worksheets, puzzles, printable games and activities. This will help you plan your French Clothes and Accessories unit (Les Vetements en Francais), with enough resources for multiple lessons to teach and review vocabulary and phrases through speaking, reading and writing activities, and there's differentiation too. My French basics resources suit students beginning French and near beginners in Primary / Elementary and Middle School (Grade 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8), Core French / FSL (French as a Second Language), and may suit others, depending on experience. Please check the previews to see a sample of the resources. All resources are in PDF, apart from the presentation, which is PowerPoint (and also included in PDF).

The resources in this great value BUNDLE are also available in three individual packets:

    French Clothing Presentation

    French Clothing Worksheets and Puzzles

    French Clothing Printable Games

    FRENCH CLOTHING PRESENTATION (AND FLASHCARDS)

PowerPoint Lesson Presentation (also in PDF format) and printable flashcards. These 77 slides (& more slides for games) introduce and review key vocabulary and phrases and include activities and tasks. I have included two versions of the PowerPoint in the Zip file with a small number of differences to words and spellings to suit Canadian and US students. However, the PowerPoints are editable and if you are based in another country, it will only require a tiny amount of editing to change a small number of words to better suit your students. I have also included both versions of the presentation in PDF format. While the PDF version does not retain the ability for teachers to reveal answers by clicking, it will still help you introduce and review this topic if you do not have PowerPoint where you work.

The presentation introduces 36 clothing and accessories words, broken into 18 core words and 18 additional words (the latter group featuring less prominently), the same two groups of 18 words used in my French Clothing Worksheets and Puzzles packet and French Clothing Games packet.

Students will also learn how to ask and answer questions about what they and others are wearing (Qu'est-ce que tu portes? etc), and what colour / color the clothes are. A table of colour adjectival agreements is included for support. Students can also learn to understand teacher commands, such as "Hang up your jackets" and "Take off your shoes". Many slides feature answers that appear when you click, for students to respond. There are tasks such as very short reading comprehensions and an additional 30+ slides at the end of the presentation (making it 116 slides in total) form a 'Splat' game and a memory game (Kim's game), which could be played in teams, with students working out which images are missing each time and giving the word in French.

Also within the Zip file is a PDF of flashcards, with two on each page. The first 18 words are the core terms used throughout the presentation and my other French clothing packets, while the latter 18 words are the extra terms that also feature in all three packets, but less prominently.

    FRENCH CLOTHING WORKSHEETS AND PUZZLES

These printable writing activities will be enough for multiple lessons and homework: 4 worksheets, 2 crosswords and a word search puzzle (all in 2 differentiated versions) plus 2 vocabulary slides to display for support if required. All files in PDF format within the Zip file. The vocab slides are also included in a PowerPoint version. Answer keys and an instruction page are included for the teacher. Please check the preview for a detailed sample. As there is a difference between US, Canadian, UK and Australian words and spelling for a small number of clothing words, I have included additional versions of the file with minor amendments. Some clothing terms are subject to additional regional variations but my aim has been to choose common terms for those countries, although there may also be others in common use.

WORKSHEETS: 4 worksheets (with answer keys). All worksheets are included in a 1-star version (for younger, lower ability or less experienced students) and a 2-star version. The 1-star versions are a little less challenging and some contain a word bank for support. Includes word-matching, answering key questions (Qu'est-ce que tu portes?), drawing activities and basic reading comprehension. Worksheet 4 focuses on teacher commands that might be used in the classroom. It could also be used to teach the different versions of ‘you’, depending on whether the noun is male (ton) female (ta) or plural (tes) and if the teacher is addressing more than one student (vos). The verb ending also changes depending on who the teacher is addressing, (e.g. enlève – one student, enlevez – more than one student).

CROSSWORDS AND WORDSEARCHES: There are 2 crosswords and a word search. The first crossword features a smaller vocabulary range; the second contains an extended range. All puzzles are differentiated 2 ways. The 1-star version of the crosswords contain a word bank for support, and the 1-star word search contains the start of each word. Answer keys provided.

    FRENCH CLOTHING GAMES PACKET:

Fun games and activities to review vocabulary. There are 4 Four in a Row game boards, a 36-card 'I have...Who has?' (J'ai...Qui a?) game, Battleships and a jigsaw puzzle. Full instructions and vocabulary slides also included. As there is a difference between US, Canadian, UK and Australian words and spelling for a small number of clothing words, I have included additional versions of the file with minor amendments.

FOUR IN A ROW: 4 different boards. Boards 1 to 3 feature 18 items, while Board 4 contains an extended range of 36. Print in colour or b&w and laminate as required. First to get four in a row - vertically, horizontally or diagonally - wins. Students roll dice, then choose a clothing word from that number column and say it in French. If correct, use a dry-wipe marker to put a symbol or initial in that box (opponents could use a different colour), and so on.

BATTLESHIPS-STYLE GAME: 6 sets of 2 identical cards. Best if laminated, with students using dry-wipe markers. Play in a similar way to traditional Battleships game. Players take the same number card as their opponent and place a cross in 4 boxes to choose clothing and colour. They take it in turns to ask questions, to discover the location of their opponent’s crosses. In French they ask, "Do you have a red dress?" or "Do you have a yellow jacket?" etc. (As-tu une robe rouge? etc.) They put a dot in the corner of the box if their opponent replies "Non" and a check mark when they reply "Oui". The first to correctly guess all 4 is the winner.

"I HAVE…WHO HAS?" GAME: This game reviews 36 clothing words (including some accessories). The first 5 pages feature a version with pictures on both sides, for lower ability or less experienced students. The second 5 pages is the same game, but with pictures removed on the left side. Print and laminate the cards, which form a continuous loop so you can start with any one. Distribute among players. First player reads the English language side of one of their cards and then all players check if they have the matching French word. If they do, they will read out both sides of their card. Students use "Qui a…?" ("Who has…?") to ask the question and "J’ai…" ("I have…") to reply. The more challenging version could also be used by individuals / pairs as a dominoes game.

JIGSAW PUZZLE (Separate File): Print and laminate the puzzle pieces for repeated use. Students place puzzle pieces to match French clothing words with correct images.
