Freebie! The bdpq Mouth Shape Trick for common letter reversal correction (SOR)
- PDF
Description
Letter reversals are common even into 2nd grade. Regardless of why a student reverses their letters, it’s worth taking the time to correct it to promote permanent storage and automaticity of the letter-sound connection.
There are tons of different ways to guide students through fixing these reversals, and different tricks work for different students!
This strategy, the Mouth Shape Trick, connects letter recognition and formation to the shape students make with their mouth when producing the sound. We read from left to right. When you come across a b or d, which part of the letter form do you come to first - the line, or the curve/circle? Match that formation with your lips: either a closed, straight line (/b/ /p/), or a curved/open mouth shape (/d/ /qu/).
Give it a try! These classroom visuals are meant to serve as a reminder for your students to try this trick when they're not sure!
