Information Regarding Fry Word Lists:

The Fry Words have been recognized as the most common words found in printed materials.

These words are ranked according to how often they appear in print, not in order of increasing difficulty.

These lists provide useful information, but I do not recommend using them as a teaching sequence.

According to Fry's research:

★ The first 25 words make up about 1/3 of all words found in publications.

★ The first 100 words make up about 1/2 of all the words found in publications.

★ The first 300 words make up about 2/3 of all written materials.

In working with the Fry Words, I found I wanted sequentially numbered lists of words. I also wanted lists presented in a font designed for primary students and thought other teachers might find them handy too.

Sincerely,

Anne Gardner (NBCT, Literacy)
