Distance Learning Update: I've added a Word Document in the folder containing a Google Slides link to share this resource with your students via Google Classroom or Drive. Parts of the pages are editable, so your students can complete them without printing them. Please note you will need to make a copy of the Google Slides to your drive before you can edit.
Students must use their fraction math skills to solve the math mystery for the Forgetful Pharaoh! They will be required to apply various fraction skills to unlock important clues. Then they must apply critical thinking and use their powers of deduction to find where the Forgetful Pharaoh left his scepter in Ancient Egypt!
Suggestion: Pace the clues one by one to keep the class at the same point. If using the clues in a different order, keep the suspect list away from students until all five clues are completed and discovered.

Preparation
- No Prep required! Print the student pages, staple or place them in a folder, and your students are set to go.
- Have the video hook ready for viewing at the start of the lesson on an IWB, iPad, or computer monitor screen.
- Editable locations list included: This lets you change the location names to alter the final mystery outcome. Two alternative pre-made lists are also included for a quick swap out.

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues
There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:
- Clue 1: Match fraction models to fractions
- Clue 2: Write fractions to fraction models
- Clue 3: More writing fractions to fraction models
- Clue 4: Ordering Fraction models from smallest to largest (same denominator)
- Clue 5: Comparing Fractions (with like denominators and fraction models)
- Only the final problem in clue 5 shows an example with models of two fractions with different denominators to discuss if wanted.
Students must use critical thinking and deductive reasoning to solve the mystery!

Multiple Uses
- Suitable for independent, pairs, or group work.
- Use it as part of your math centers, add it to your sub-tubs, make it part of your early finisher tasks, give itfor homework, or make it part of your classroom practice/review sessions.
I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue, either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "We must learn something new before attempting the next clue."

How long will this activity take?
Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class.
