Description

Let Fraction Flags take your students on a mathematical trip around the world!

My students have always been fascinated with colorful flags from around the world. The flags have inspired students to study maps, research distant countries, and learn about the customs and traditions of unfamiliar cultures.

The colorful flags have also brought fractions to life.

Two books are included in Fraction Flags:

SEEING RED: This six-page book focuses on flags that are one-fourth RED, one-half RED, three-fourths RED, one-third RED, and two-thirds RED.

FEELING BLUE & GOING GREEN: This nine-page book focuses on flags that are one-fourth BLUE, one-fourth GREEN, one-half BLUE, one-third BLUE, one-third GREEN, two-thirds BLUE, two-thirds GREEN, and two-ninths GREEN.

There’s very little preparation needed!

Surround Your Students With World Flags: Hang colorful posters of world flags on classroom walls and have a stack of atlases and flag books on hand. Invite students to research world flags on the computer.

Provide The Following Tools: Have rulers, pencils, erasers, colored pencils, thin markers, and crayons available.

First, students are asked to color the flags of given country. Next, students are asked to draw and color flags on their own.
A few pages invite the students to identify equivalent fractions. As students research their flags, the room buzzes with “fraction talk”. Students welcome the opportunity to choose flags on their own.
They delight in comparing the flags that were chosen for their completed books.

If you prefer, use the pages of the book individually, rather than providing students with the stapled book.

Fraction Flags will be the perfect addition to a substitute teacher’s “bag of tricks”.

It is ideal for Homeschoolers.
