Description
Lab Overview – The students will move from task to task to complete the fossil lab.
Materials– Plaster a Paris/wall compound, Vaseline, plastic knife, and random items to make own fossils (ex. Leaves, hair bows etc.). Samples of real fossils; pictures will work.
Suggestions: Coat items with Vaseline before pressing them into the plaster. They will be easier to pry out with plastic knife after drying.
Prior Knowledge – Should have reviewed term fossil.
Time – One 20 to 30 minute time slot to make fossils, and 1 class period to finish the other 3 task cards. Allowed time for discussing data.
Activity Directions: The students should work in groups of no more than two for task cards 2, 3 and 4. Task 1 should be completed alone. Complete each task as directed. Information gathered from each task should be recorded in student journals.
