Forensic DNA Evidence Case Study Activity Description

This is designed to be a group activity. The class is split up into groups. Each group is given an article about a particular historical incident involving Forensic DNA Evidence. The groups then read through their article, and fill out the Forensic DNA Evidence Case Study Activity Handout.

The handout has the following areas to be filled out:

• Name of case
• Date
• Location
• Significance
• Description of the case
• Conclusion

After the students fill out their handouts, they brief the class about their case.

History Channel on the Early Implementation of DNA in Forensic Science

This assignment is a Video Reflection of the History Channel’s on the Early Implementation of DNA in Forensic Science video. This video describes how DNA was used early on in helping to solve crimes. The video is about 45 minutes long.

This video is available on YouTube for free. The link to the video is included with the download.

Several years ago I stopped using accompanying worksheets to videos I show in class. Too many times students are more focused in answering the questions, rather than absorbing what they are watching. But, I wanted the students to be actively engaged with the video. So, I started using “Video Reflections”.

The video reflection handout has two columns on it. Student write what they have learned on the column on the left. They write down any questions they have on the column to the right. At the end of class, each student needs to tell the teacher something they learned, or a question they have.

When given a choice, most students would rather have this type of assignment, compared to a worksheet.

John Wayne Gacy

This assignment is a Video Reflection of the documentary about John Wayne Gacy, AKA “The Killer Clown.” The video is approximately 45 minutes long.

Gacy “was an American serial killer and rapist. He sexually assaulted, tortured and murdered at least 33 teenage boys and young men between 1972 and 1978 in Cook County, Illinois. Gacy became known as the "Killer Clown" because of his charitable services at fundraising events, parades, and children's parties where he would dress as "Pogo the Clown", a character he devised himself.”

The Forensics: Trace Evidence- Hair Activity allows the students to explore how hair may be used as a means of identification.

The activity has four parts.

• Part I- Seeing the Cuticle by making an impression.
• Part II- Analysis under a Light Microscope.
• Part III- Looking at Human Hair and classifying the growth stage.
• Going Further- Looking at hair samples from eyebrows, eyelashes, and facial hair.

The activity has step-by-step instructions.

Images and descriptions of what the hair looks like in Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen phase of hair growth.

Includes a Data Sheet for the students to log their observations and answer conclusion questions.

Serial Killer Case Study Activity Description

This is designed to be a group activity. The class is split up into groups. Each group is given an article about a particular serial killer. The groups then reads through their article, and fill out the Serial Killer Case Study Activity Handout. The handout has the following areas to be filled out:

• Name of case
• Date
• Background
• Modus Operandi
• Killings and Sentence

After the students fill out their handouts they brief the class about their case.

The DNA, Forensics Psychology, Serial Killer, Hair & Fiber Study Guide is three pages long. It lists 24 key Vocabulary Words that the students need to define. There are also 11 open response type questions the students need to answer.

Game Play Suggestion

• Set up tables in front of the classroom, 1 table per team.
• Divide the class up into 3-5 team, depending on class size.
• Have each student taking a turn coming up that teams table at the front of the class.
• Rotate, so each team gets to pick the Answer on the screen.
• Each team representative in the front of the class writes down their answer.
• For each correct answer the team gets a point.
• The team with the most points when the game ends wins.

I found that doing the game this way, each and every student participates. This prevents that one student from dominating the game.

This is a fun way to review for a test.

The Forensics DNA Evidence, Forensics Psychology, Serial Killer and Hair & Fiber Evidence Portfolio/Reflective Journal is an assessment tool where the STUDENT picks how they want to show you they have mastery of the subject.

The students are given 12 different objectives they need to show mastery of. They do this by completing a project. They type is of their choice. These are some suggestions:

• Make a collage
• Comprise a song or rap
• Construct a mobile
• Make a poster
• Assemble a scrap book
• Traditional answer in writing (in a "project" form)
• Other ideas you have (check with me first)

I give this type of assignment the very first day of the unit. It is my belief that the teacher needs to let the students know exactly what they are expected to know by the time the unit is over. This also gives them time to work on their project.

This assignment can be an additional assessment for students or the main assessment used.
