Description

This lab is EASY PREP, it's hands-on, students are engaged, it includes many physics concepts, it’s STEM, AND you get two of my top selling products in one!

I include detailed TEACHER NOTES, Digital and Print student copy, a Digital and Print Kinetic and Potential Energy Card Sort, an Energy Conversion Chart and a KEY for easy grading and prep.

Students use parts of the engineering design process to get their marble to stop by using friction, just like a real roller coaster. Students pretend like they are engineers trying to get a contract from Knott’s Berry Farm to build a fun and safe roller coaster!

Materials:

Tubing/Plumbing insulation from Home Depot, marbles, masking tape, meter sticks and timers (I let them use their phones).

THIS INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING CONCEPTS:

Kinetic energy, potential energy, rolling friction, fluid friction, static friction, momentum, gravity, acceleration and centripetal force and engineering.

TIMELINE FOR THE STEM ROLLER COASTER LAB

1) USING PREZI DO 20 MINUTES OF NOTES AND CLASS DISCUSSION.

2) CARD SORT AND CLASS DISCUSSION 20 MINUTES OR 50 MINUTES IF YOU DO CARD SORT, CLASS DISCUSSION AND FILL IN THE ENERGY CONVERSIONS HANDOUT.

3) 30 MINUTES DISCUSSING, SKETCHING AND DESIGNING PROTOTYPE.

4) 15 MINUTES OF MODELING & TIPS. THEN 1 HOUR 30 MINUTES OF BUILDING & COLLECTING DATA.

5) QUESTIONS AND SKETCHES ARE HOMEWORK.

6) 40 MINUTES OF GRADING, DISCUSSING, REVISTING AND ADDRESSING MISCONCEPTIONS WITH THE CLASS.

Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI):

PS2.A:  Forces and Motion

PS2.B:  Types of Interactions

Crosscutting Concepts:

-Cause and Effect

-Systems and System Models

-Energy and Matter: Flows, Cycles, and Conservation

-Structure and Function

Science and Engineering Practices:

-Asking Questions and Defining Problems

Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts.
Integrate quantitative or technical information expressed in words in a text with a version of that information expressed visually (e.g., in a flowchart, diagram, model, graph, or table).
NGSSMS-ETS1-2
Evaluate competing design solutions using a systematic process to determine how well they meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
NGSSMS-ETS1-4
Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
NGSSMS-ETS1-1
Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.
