Flashlight Word Detectives: Animals - Decode Initial Sounds to Read Words

Students identify the initial sounds of pictured words in order to read a mystery animal word. Then they can self-check using a flashlight behind the card or on a light table to reveal the word and picture as a Flashlight Friday center or an everyday literacy center. This center aligns with the Science of Reading and is a fun way to get your students identifying the initial sounds, blending, and reading words. You can use the activity orally or involve writing. This set includes 16 cards with the following mystery words of varying difficulty:

dog, pig, cow, bat, ant, fish, bug, frog, rat, bee, cat, hen, fox, sheep, yak, lion.
