Five Little Monkeys Song

(Songs, Circle Time, Puppets, Counting, Social Skills)

Practise counting numbers 1 to 5 during circle time or use during your “Animlas” or "Jungle" theme/unit. The puppets come in two sizes: large and small. I use the large version on my felt board and the small version on a wooden puppet holder I made from scrap wood. (Check out the puppet holder in the thumbnails for the Songs We Sing cards).

How do you do it?
I place the bed on my felt board with all five monkeys attached to it (you can use self-adhesive velcro dots or clothespins). We count the monkeys and I begin singing the first verse. When it says "one fell off and bumped his head", I take one monkey and make it dramatically fall and bump it's head on the floor. At the end of the verse, I shake my head and say, "But they didn't listen!" We count the remaining monkeys and sing again. I repeat this until there are no monkeys left. The next time I bring out the song, I choose children to make the monkeys fall off the bed. It’s a great way to practise counting and learn about working together and taking turns.
