Five Little Elves - the song

(Songs, Circle Time, Christmas, Counting, Social Skills)

Practise counting numbers 1 to 5 during circle time or use this song during your Christmas theme/unit. The puppets come in two sizes: large and mini. I use the large version on my felt board and the mini version on a wooden puppet holder I made from scrap wood. (Check out the puppet holder in the thumbnails for the Songs We Sing cards). Cut out the elves (requires attention to detail) and then you'll have the cutest set of Elves around!! There are also two song lyric posters plus two follow-up activities: a cut & paste activity and 'make your own elf' activity!

How do you do it?
I place the sleigh on my felt board with all five elves attached to it (you can use self-adhesive velcro dots or clothespins). We count the elves and I begin singing the first verse. When it says "One jumped off and ran away", I take one elf and make it dramatically run off. We count the remaining elves and sing again. I repeat this until all five elves are gone. The next time I bring out the song, I choose children to make the elves run away. It’s a great way to practise counting and learn about working together and taking turns.
