Easy winter craft? Yes please!

Students complete 3-4 easy steps to make each craft (solve, cut, color, and glue). Best of all, this is low prep for teachers! Simply print and go. Written and visual instructions are included for your students if you would like to print them out or display them on technology.

The first two crafts come in two versions (an addition version and a subtraction version). The tree craft is combined addition and subtraction.

These grade 1 math activities are designed for first grade and align to the common core standards listed below. However, these crafts are suitable for students in kindergarten and second grade, based on your student's abilities.

These winter craft math activities is great for math lessons, if you want a creative/art element, and excellent for wall displays/bulletin boards. These winter addition crafts and winter subtraction crafts are pretty cute, right?!

Work with addition and subtraction equations.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.D.7 - SNOWMAN MATH CRAFT
Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true and which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 - 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.D.8 - HOT CHOCOLATE CRAFT
Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = _ - 3, 6 + 6 = _.

Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.B.3- TREE CRAFT
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract.2 Examples: If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.)

Please view the preview document. It shows some what's included in this 1st grade winter math craftivity. For example, for the snowman craft you will get:

  • A4 picture of the completed craft
  • Instruction page with pictures and written steps
  • 2 versions of the craft (e.g. one addition and one subtraction)

  • Blank craft with no math facts
  • 2 pages of addition facts
  • 1 page of blank boxes where you can print and write your own addition math facts
  • 2 pages of subtraction facts
  • 1 page of blank boxes where you can print and write your own subtraction math facts

When/how to use each math craftivity:

  • Whole group math lessons in winter
  • Small group work (winter math centers)

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true and which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 - 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.
Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = ▯ - 3, 6 + 6 = ▯.
