Description
This lesson has worked so well the first day of school for the last nine years, that I’m looking forward to using it again with my classes this year!
This product contains everything you need for the first day, including:
- a detailed lesson plan plus extra tips (like ideas for teaching some basic TPR commands)
-a Powerpoint/Google Slides presentation to project throughout the lesson
- printable stand-up nametags that can double as a speaking activity, since students write their name on one side and answer questions about themselves on the other
- An engaging meet-the-teacher activity (students work with a partner to make guesses about you, and then they see if they were right! See thumbnail)
-An icebreaker class activity that elicits fun stories from students
-A two-page customizable syllabus (the first page is shown in the thumbnails)
-A sheet for students to fill out information about themselves, plus an alternative link to a Google Form if you’d prefer a digital version
-A bonus "Would You Rather" ice breaker in comprehensible Spanish, that you could do with extra time or on the second day (added in 2022).
-One more bonus icebreaker activity for any time during the first weeks (added in 2023). Students have a class discussion comparing a language class with a sports team (since both have members that need to work together), and then students color their own jersey on a printable bulletin board border that you can hang around your room.
This lesson works best with Spanish 1-2 classes, but to use it with a higher level, just change the meet-the-teacher activity so it has Spanish phrases instead of English ones, and substitute the basic TPR classroom commands in the lesson plan for more advanced commands.
The example syllabus is aimed at a curriculum that starts with the Realidades Para Empezar unit for Spanish 1, but it can easily be customized.

This lesson has gone well for all of my Spanish 1 -3 classes the last eleven years, whether the class was large or small, or had quiet or incredibly energetic students. I hope this helps you have a great first day back!
