What educators are saying

This was such a fun way to build community! It was different from other activities I have used and was a great way to see what my incoming students already knew!
My favourite kind of back to school activities! Ones that still have some learning/review involved, while getting to know new friends and their different abilities.

Description

Do you need fun math activities for the first day of school that also help your 4th grade students get to know each other? These cooperative learning activities are perfect for your fourth grade math class! They’re engaging, low prep, and easy to implement, too. Each beginning of the year math review activity has different sets of problems that review what students learned in math last year in 3rd grade.

Choose from Find a Friend activities - also known as find someone who - that students complete as a whole class, small group, or with partners; task cards that can be used with your favorite task card games; or partner practice pages to get them back in the habit of writing and talking about math. Each one includes unique questions, so you can use them all without worrying about repetition.

Here’s what’s included:

  • 5 Find a Friend math review pages
  • 32 differentiated task cards and a recording sheet
  • 16 pages of differentiated partner practice pages (4 pages each at 4 different levels)
  • Answer keys
  • Directions and ideas for your classroom

Your students will love getting ready to learn this year using these first day of school activities for 4th grade! They’ll be out of their seats and talking about math together. You’ll love that it’s easy to differentiate for your students, so you don’t have to find different activities for everyone!

These beginning of the year math review activities are all low ink and low prep. You’ll be ready to go in minutes, and only need a printer and some scissors to be ready to go!

TEACHERS LIKE YOU SAID...

❤️ This is a great example of two birds, one stone. The students got to talk, move about the room and get to know each other while I got an informal assessment of their math skills. Loved it!

❤️ I love love love this activity and so have my students! It's a great formative assessment for me to see who may need more review time at the beginning of the year. My kids thought it was so much fun! Thanks!

❤️ This product worked great for our "Grade Level Bump-up" when the third graders visited my fourth grade class at the end of the year.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses of objects using standard units of grams (g), kilograms (kg), and liters (l). Add, subtract, multiply, or divide to solve one-step word problems involving masses or volumes that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as a beaker with a measurement scale) to represent the problem.
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units-whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
