Description
Time for a brain break! If days before a break stress your students, or after the end of exams finds you with extra time, let your students walk, talk and try these "Strong In Body and Mind" puzzles and challenges. They can relax and refocus with "Find Someone Who..." activities for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, two for New Years, and a "Day One" if you start a new course in January.
“A strong body makes the mind strong” wrote President Thomas Jefferson in 1795. How right was he? These partner and circulating speaking tasks will maximize the participation in your classroom. These activities are in Microsoft Word .doc form so that you can customize the discussion to fit the needs of your students.
“Find Someone Who” and “Give One, Get One” are get-to-know games with a kinematic component. Give students a few minutes to brainstorm as much as they can. Students use a pencil and walk around the room to find someone to quiz with. Students circulate and fill in classmates' names in the boxes if they find someone who matches that square. They give one answer to get one answer from each other, with back and forth speaking in pairs, alternating generating oral responses. After a given amount of time, teacher stops and debriefs students. I like to use “Takeoff/Touchdown” formative assessment.
