Description

This resource was recently updated!

Are you searching for a thorough, engaging, and differentiated unit plan for financial math literacy (earning an income)? Then this resource is for you!

This thoughtfully constructed unit is designed to bring math to life, ensuring an enriching learning experience for your students whether you’re in the classroom, at home, or distance learning. No prep necessary - everything you need to teach the entire unit is in the package (including resources for teachers such as a pacing guide, detailed answer keys, lesson plans, and rubrics).

This unit was designed for the Math Workplace 10 course in British Columbia Canada (aligned with the redesigned BC curriculum and new reporting order in 2023). However, with editable files in both .pdf and .docx formats, you have the flexibility to customize the content to suit your students' needs and your teaching style. The preview document contains images and information about every resource included.

WHAT SETS THIS RESOURCE APART:

  1. Formative Assessment Opportunities for Personalized Growth
This unit has multiple formative assessment strategies where students can get specific feedback on their progress. There are also opportunities for students to self-assess and reflect, empowering students to become active in their learning. All questions are marked with icons indicating to students which mathematical competency they are pursuing, aiding their self-directed learning process.
  2. Interactivity and Collaboration
Each unit comes with engaging warm-up ideas and interactive whiteboard activities, which help foster a supportive learning environment. Students will be actively involved and thinking in your classroom.
  3. Differentiation
Cater to diverse learning needs with differentiated daily practice assignments, tiered by difficulty level, allowing every student to challenge themselves and find success. An extension assignment is provided for early finishers as well.
  4. Real-World Connections and Project-Based Learning
The unit includes a variety of authentic real-world applications in the warm-ups, lesson notes, activities, assignments, etc. The rich tasks (mini projects), where students apply their understanding, foster creativity and critical thinking.

WHAT IS INCLUDED:

  • 4 lesson packs (scaffolded notes, group task cards, individual practice assignments, checkpoints all with answer keys)
  • 2 rich task mini-projects. One on choosing a summer job, and one on calculating net income. Rubrics for marking and exemplars are included.
  • 1 quiz with rubric and answer key
  • 1 review assignment (organized by mathematical competency and intended to prepare students for the test)
  • 1 final unit test assessment (includes rubric for marking and answer key)

LEARNING GOALS:

  • Calculating earnings based on a rate (e.g. hourly wage, annual salary, etc.)
  • Calculate piecework and commission earnings
  • Calculate and understand how additional earnings are applied (e.g. bonuses, overtime, tips, etc.)
  • Calculate and understand how deductions are applied (e.g. taxes, benefits, pension, etc.)

The resource was designed for standards-based grading and to fit the requirements of the new reporting order in British Columbia (2023), however all resources are editable and can be adapted to fit your assessment preferences.
