Description
These figurative language through song lyrics passage worksheets for middle school are based on a pre-Hip Hop history rap song.
Students will listen to the song then use the song lyrics as a reading passage to identify examples of figurative language in text.
The song for this activity explores the real-life story of Bill who witnessed how community groups and gangs in the Bronx influenced the birth of Hip Hop and rap music. The song uses similes, metaphors, and Hip Hop terminology to narrate these events and contains many examples of figurative language.

These activities include:
- the song lyrics for use as a reading passage
- a link to listen to the song with subtitles for students
- 6 multiple-choice, figurative vs. literal language questions based on the song lyrics with the answer key
- 6 multiple-choice, identify the meaning of figurative sentences questions based on the song lyrics with the answer key
- a writing activity that challenges students to find a literal sentence in the song then rewrite it using figurative language
How to use these activities:
- Explain figurative and literal language using the instructions on page 1. Provide your own examples or ask for examples of each type from the class if necessary.
- Next, have students listen to the song while following along with the lyrics on pages 2 and 3.
- Guide students through answering question 1 as a class. Review with them as necessary.
- Students will now answer the remaining 5 multiple-choice questions.
- Students will then complete the activities for identifying the meaning of figurative sentences on pages 4 and 5.
- The answer keys are located on pages 6 and 7.
