Description

Want to teach your students to track and reflect on their own progress in meeting learning targets? Use these bright and colorful PRINT and GO I CAN STATEMENTS to post the revised Kentucky Social Studies Standards in student-friendly language. In August, 2019, Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Social Studies were adopted and Kentucky teachers and schools are now required to use the KAS for Social Studies  as the basis of their curricula and instruction. Communicating these goals through the posting of student-friendly “I can” statements in the classroom helps students become aware of what they will have to do to be successful.'

There are few tools more helpful in the classroom than the effective use of "I Can"t statements. These colorful “I Can” Statements can be posted so the students can read and refer to them throughout the social studies lesson. When posted in the classroom, the statements can be reviewed at the beginning of the lesson and throughout the class period, helping the teacher keep the focus of the lesson while assisting the students in focusing their thinking. The statements are written and communicated so they can be formatively assessed throughout the lesson.

"I Can" statements are best printed on light-weight cardstock and laminated for durability. Because all classrooms are unique, we have also included five EDITABLE slides for teachers to use if they wish to compose their own "I can" for some standards. Wording of an “I Can” statement can be revised using these templates while maintaining the intent of the standard. The "I Can" statements in our resource incorporates the content specific vocabulary to assist students in developing a familiarity and understanding of terminology necessary be successful at the level of rigor presented.
