Description

Use this graphic organizer to compare and contrast feudalism in Japan and feudalism in Europe. In what way was it similar? How did it differ? If you have been using Icons of Depth and Complexity for differentiated instructions, your students should be familiar with the icons. If not, the explanation is below:
This frame/graphic organizer could be used as students learn about feudalism. Students may take meaningful notes from the textbook or lecture notes as they note the language of the discipline (specific vocabulary to describe a historical event), look for patterns, describe the details, and examine the rules for each type of feudalism in Japan and Europe.

They may work in teams, individually, or with a partner to complete the organizer. This organizer may also be used as pre-writing activity for the essay to follow or as a study guide for the test.
I have students work in groups and then they present their findings to class. It is interesting to see that different groups find different patterns and focus on different rules while reading the same exact text from the history textbook.
While groups present I had other students to complete the missing information on their own organizers. This lesson provokes deep thinking competition between the teams as they try to find more patterns, descriptions, and rules than the other team. The slides include clear directions for students.
